When the temperature drops the first thing we reach for are our favorite sweaters and Autumn outerwear. We are lovers of quality and simplicity; we admire pieces that can be worn in many different ways and throughout different seasons. We take inspiration from the French, who are masters at creating the coveted capsule wardrobe. Midi skirts are one of the most loved and worn pieces in our closet. Many of you have probably worn yours all summer long. They flatter a variety of body types, they are effortless and easy to toss on during a warm summer day with a breezy top and sandals while on your way to the market and they pack up into practically nothing.   But...

It's interesting that "Dressing Like A French Girl" is hugely popular right now because of the likes of It French Girls on Instagram Jeanne Damas, Sabina Socol, and AnneLaure Mais Moreau... but wanting to evoke the French girl look has been around for years and years. Even centuries! But the French Girl look isn't even entirely French. Most of the most iconic French style icons weren't even French! To me, the French Girl look is a spirit. It's a way of being.  I won't get too into it because this is an outfit idea post and these are short and sweet... but...

There is nothing more feminine than a soft dress of flowing fabric, flushed lips and cheeks and our favorite accessory: a classic hat. Add braids that are tied with ribbons and we're basically in love. The first time we came across Jane March's character in The Lover, we were practically swooning.  Hats are so multipurpose and add an instant touch of grace and mystery. Whether we are headed to the market, beach, or out for an afternoon walk, we seldom leave home without one.   

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by life and dreamt of leaving it all behind in order to relocate to a rural Greek island in the 1930s then we have some major inspiration for you: The Durrells.  We are completely enamored with this sweet miniseries which features Louisa Durrell, a widow who moves her family from England to the Greek island of Corfu in 1935. Everything about the show is dreamy, from her red rustic kitchen with copper pots hanging off the walls, to her wardrobe, which features the cutest separates: who else loves button up floral shirts tucked into high waisted skirts...

The first time I saw this movie I was floored by Penelope Cruz's character. I also had to rewatch it just for the outfit inspiration. I love everything about her style: the loose, messy romantic hair, the all white outfits, and her fearless temper. It makes me daydream about a riverside bike ride in sandals, a slip dress and an antique hat for a picnic in the grass with my Spanish artist lover.  Images via Pinterest

If I'm looking for an instant touch of femininity, romanticism, and old fashioned elegance I almost always reach for one of the simplest yet most overlooked accessories: the hair bow. These beauties elevate any outfit, even when I toss on my vintage Levis and white linen t-shirt. Whether it's a vintage silk scarf tied at the base of my ponytail or pulling half of my hair back loosely in a beautiful bow barrette It's a simple finishing touch that allows me to channel my inner Victorian girl while remaining polished and sophisticated.  Image sourced via pinterest. 

I love a good almost monochromatic outfit, there is something so chic and feminine about neutrals on neutrals especially when it involves a pretty blouse and high waist trousers...very Katherine Hepburn, no?  This look from Mode Amour will never go out of style (in my opinion) because every component of the outfit is timeless. Simple leather sandals, straw handbag, high waist trousers, silk blouse... there is no ornamentation on anything, no funky little detail about any of it.  You could wear this outfit to the office, on vacation, on a solo date at a cafe before nipping off to the bookstore...

I will always be a forever fan of midi skirts! And a-line skirts for that matter. I find them universally flattering, which is why if you don't own a midi skirt yet, you absolutely must! This pretty sky blue midi skirt (it's vintage!) is worn with a cream blouse knotted at the waist and a camisole (is my guess) underneath.
